do you agree with this statement?
a recession is when your neighbor loses his job. a depression is when you lose your job. a recovery is when Barack Obama loses his job.
No.

Every time we’ve had a conservative Republican in office, we’ve had a recession or depression. The Conservative Republicans had welfare for big corporations.

i couldn’t agree anymore, and i applaud this statement.
Jackie | Jan 18, 2010
No. This recession started in late 2007. It got worse because the banks p***ed away so much money, and the credit market dried up. People lost their jobs because the baks refused to lend money to businesses, and they had to lay people off. Simple.
BTW, that joke has been making the rounds on YA for a while now. Recycling doesn’t work with jokes, or toilet paper.

Should I be concerned about the BNP? Would they keep some non-whites here?
This is a rather long post, but one I feel is important, so please read
My dad (who is deceased) was a white Englishman and my mother (who I hardly have contact with) is a Filipino immigrant, she married him just before I was born (I’m nearly 20). I’m starting university next September to do a Criminal Justice degree but after that I’m hoping to go on to British Army Officer selection, pass that and then train at Sandhurst, as I hope to become a Parachute Regiment Officer. I thought I would give you a little background.
I feel fully British inside, I was born here, speak only English, have a white long term girlfriend, and want to serve my country through the armed forces. The only thing that separates me from the white British people is the colour of my skin; it is light brown, and my eyes, which are very dark brown. I do look like I was born mixed race.
Now, my thoughts, and questions, are this… would Nick Griffin be happy in keeping me here? What about other hardworking folk of mixed race? What about hardworking immigrants, who aren’t born here but contribute a lot to society? (say, working for British intelligence e.g. MI5 (I’m sure there would be at least a couple), or the police, or other specialist jobs such as surgeons?)
Now, don’t get me wrong, I have read FULLY, and I mean fully, the policies of the BNP as they stand, at present, on their website. I have watched interviews of Griffin recently saying it would be hard for him to imagine Britain without a small, proportionate number of immigrants and their descendents, and those who contribute are ‘welcome to stay’. But does he mean it?
I envisage, maybe in 30 - 40 years, the BNP becoming perhaps a third or second party in British politics. I do agree immigration in this country is too much. Now, before you read what I have to say, please have an open mind.
I clearly see both sides of the argument (as in those who are loyal to the BNP and those is vehemently oppose them). I see both sides. I see much non-white scum, and much white scum. I live in a town near Liverpool which is overwhelmingly white. So I suppose I don’t see much of a ‘race problem’ here. But too often I see ‘chavs’, who are clearly white Britons, drinking, hurling abuse at the public, partying loudly until 4am, smashed bottles left everywhere near the block of flats I live at, carrying knives, racist, don’t bother getting an education, a job, and have about 5 children by the time they’re 21, providing their families through benefits. But I am also aware of those people who probably lead very similar lives who were either not born here, or are children of those not born here. It works both ways indeed.
If the BNP got into power and threw everyone like me out along with immigrants, would the white British people who voted them in shout out in uproar and defend those in my situation? If the BNP have indeed changed, then surely that won

Is there something wrong with me because I was hit?
I left my husband about a week before Christmas. We were married 5 years. He spent the last 2 years of our lives punching me in the face, strangling me, choking me. He has also cheated on me 10x over these past 5 years. Fortunately we dont have children. However the abuse had started way before I realized it had. He started controlling me pretty close to about the time we got married. It progressed from controling to verbal abuse, then emotional abuse, isolating me from my friends, and then later to physical abuse, at this time, I couldnt leave my bedroom. I didnt realize the progression of the abuse until I spoke with my therapist about it. Because of all of the emotional damage I have been seeing a therapist for the past month. I have good days and i have bad days. Its only been a month but he has a girlfriend now. What scares me now is, what if he treats her better than he has treated me? What if he never hits her? What if I’m a defect and I end up being the only person he beat? I’m questioning myself more and more every day. I feel more horrible every day. I feel like I caused this some how and I am at fault. If he doesnt hit her, does it mean that there was something wrong with me the whole time?
Please seek professional help or see you local minster. Nothing is wrong with you and your husband is jerk and you need to get out before he kills you.

My sister is adopting and I really don't know if I think that is a good idea?
I have two sisters, both older and both have considered adoption before. My biggest fear was the middle sister to adopt but I came to find out that the eldest is half way through the process and that if all goes according to plan she will have a daughter anytime from this August to middle december.
I did not have regular contact for her for about a year and she does not know that I know she is adopting. She asked our mother to tell me, the other sister and my dad (her stepfather). To be honest no one in this family is supportive of anything anyone else does. My sister makes a good living, im not worried about that at all. What I am worried about is my sisters harsh beliefs. She is a fundamental christan, and in all due respect she goes off the wall sometimes. A few years ago her and I got into a fight because she advised the parents of a teenager at her church to beat him, not just spank but "beat the hell out of him and then change the locks." I told her she cannot do that, its illegal to abuse children and her exact response was "they can’t do anything, the constitution protects freedom of religion and its in the bible to BEAT your children!" and she actually yelled the word beat. In addition to that she has worked with big brothers/sisters and I’ve seen her make fun of the girl’s family with the girl in the room before, even making fun of the girl at times. There are so many things that I am unsure if she is fit and prepared to do but I do not know if she has changed.
I want to talk to her about it but I don’t know how to bring it up. I would feel weird just walking into her apartment and giving her a list of questions but at the same time I really feel as if she went into this blindly. She’s told my mother that when the girl she adopts turns 11 she will send the girl to my mother to have a talk about periods so I really do not know how she will handle the girl coming home from school with sex education pamphlets.
How, if at all, should I talk to her about this?
I’m biased here, you got me as BEAT your children………….
find out which agency she is adopting through and tell the agency your concerns. If you are a younger person, having a adult back up your accusations will help.
You won’t get through to her, I doubt she will listen to you.
Don’t stop fighting………………….you are right. If at the end of the day you do everything in your power and no one listens, at least you can live with the fact that you DID do everything possible. Good luck

YES YES YES YES YES… a million times yes, tell anyone you can about this. My biological mom is the exact same way and she has made my half-siblings lives a living hell. Heck she has put me though a month of mental hell and I’ve only talked to her a few times over the phone and met her one time. I’m not sure who this could be report to, but hopefully somebody here knows. No child whether adopted or biological deserves to grow up in the kind of home your sister will provide. If she does manage to adopt a child, make sure you watch like a hawk and if you suspect any abuse, get on the hotline to CPS right way. Many of the adoptees here have been abused by there adopted parents and many are dealing with the fall out well into there adult years. This is a preventable trauma if you can get someone to listen to you. I’m hoping you all of the best.
Rani | Jan 11, 2010
The best way, believe it or not is to write her a letter. The reason this works is because you’ll be able to tell her all your concerns and she will read your whole letter without arguing with you or getting mad because you will not be next to her for her to get mad at you. I am a big reader of the Bible and have read it many times and still do. I know this though that the bible never states to beat your kids it does say however to "discipline" them with a rod. It never says beat. Much like a belt is used or my preferred method spank them with your hand and only if they go way overboard like swear at you as an example. I am a strong christian and have firm beliefs. I am a male and 22 years old and I have kids from my wife’s side. She was married once but her first husband cheated on her. I had to go through the struggles of having new kids in my life while trying to incorporate the Bible. I also grew up being beat on as a kid like what your sister said and this is why I don’t agree with what she said because it happened to me and I know I don’t want my kids feeling the way I did when I was young but again I wont let them get out of line. I am slow to anger so that helps I just think your sister needs a little of that. hope this helps
Vince | Jan 11, 2010
Yes, contact the agency she is working with and tell them your concerns. She SHOULDN’T adopt.
ETA: The concern here is the belief and high probability of abuse, not necessarily the religious beliefs. I certainly have my problems with fundamentalist religious beliefs, but I DO know lots of "Christians" who DON’T believe in physical abuse. One of the most fundamentalist people I know, my old college roommate, doesn’t believe in physical punishment and said once when we were having a conversation, "There are so many better ways to discipline your child than spanking." I totally agree. However, this same roommate also said she would kill her children if God told her to, but "He wouldn’t do that" . . . so maybe the fundamentalist beliefs are enough in themselves to be an unfit parent. LOL
Erin L | Jan 12, 2010
ok tell her its not a good idea that she know nothing aboutt rhe kid and it could turn out as a killer
deyla | Jan 12, 2010
In my opinion Freckle Face’s answer is outstanding!
Reasoning with people with strong religious beliefs is ineffective at best. I doubt you’ll help her see that beating children is abusive, damaging and wrong.
Although going behind someones back is rarely the right thing to do, in this case it seems justified. The agency and DCFS must be made aware of her views and your concerns.
BLW_KAM | Jan 12, 2010
Unless she asks your opinion what you think doesn’t mean a hill of beans to her I’m sure.
I know many fundamentalist Christians and they are very nice people who raise their children in a loving home and they don’t beat their adopted children at all.
cricketlady | Jan 12, 2010
I’m with deyla - tell her adoption turns us into psycho’s and killers, and that she should go look up Adopted Child Syndrome, and see how many of us adoptees suffering from this have killed our aparents in a fit of uncontrollable rage. *nods*

Is my 17 month old's speech development slow?
My daughter is 17 months old (soon to be 18), and my husband and I are concerned that her speech is a bit delayed, as my in-laws recently pointed out that she should really be talking more often (they’re doctors). She doesn’t join many words together yet (the lone exception is ‘catty no no!’- which we’re surprised at, because we don’t really tell the cat ‘no’). They’ve insisted that she should be speaking much more and forming sentences. We’ve been working with her with word cards and games, which she enjoys, but I think she’s doing just fine. Below are a list of words that she consistently says. Please tell me what you think- is she a bit delayed, or normal for her age? Thanks!
Words she says:
Catty (the name of the family cat)
No (or, ‘no no’)
Yeah
Nana (for banana)
Yum
Apple (pronounced ‘appuh’)
Bottle (pronounced ‘bahdoo’)
toast (pronounced ‘toes’)
up
down
Bye bye
Hello
Shoe
Nose
Eyes
Keys
Teeth
Ball
dog (pronounced ‘dah’)
elephant (pronounced as a word fragment- ‘ella’)
mama
dada
She does usually understand what I ask of her (though being quite willful, doesn’t always follow through). For example, if I ask her ‘where is the cat?’ she’ll look for him, or tell her ‘your daddy’s almost home’ her face will light up and she’ll run to the front door. She knows ’sit down’ and ’stand up’ pretty well, as well as ‘give that to mommy’ and ‘be gentle’. We’re still working on ‘no’, but she knows exactly what it means, because she immediately acts out.
Thanks for the reassurances! She’s a happy chipper girl, and I didn’t think anything was wrong, but doubt does creep it (especially from people who are supposedly in the know)
Does she understand you when you tell her something or ask for something? If she is doing that, then she is probably fine. Every child is different. My first walked and talked before a year. My last is 17 mos and says mama, dada and grunts. But if you tell him to do something he will. He just doesn’t want to talk yet. As long as you aren’t concerned, then she is probably fine. There is no "right" age that they should be doing everything, just relax and let her be a baby.
Pete | Jan 13, 2010
thats so cuuuute. okay but no i think you should wait a bit, and give her a bit of time to learn. some children learn slower than others, but ultamitely turn out just fine. i think the things she says for her age are good enough to say shes not retarded

dont worry too much, but keep at it! good luck
Ivanna Humbellot | Jan 13, 2010
by seventeen months, many children are starting to put a few words together (though we may not understand them) - but if I were you, I wouldn’t worry too much. She certainly has a good grasp of words. What will likely happen is that literally overnight, you will notice her starting to make short sentences. Seventeen month olds have pretty good comprehension, what would happen if you were to try to ask her questions that require her to use more than one word? For instance…."where did the kitty go?" or, "what things should we put in the bathtub for your bath?" - I don’t know, just an idea.
Jo | Jan 13, 2010
Children all learn at different times..I think she is doing fine.. My nephew didnt say anything until after the age of 2 and at the age of 3 is just starting to sort of put sentences together.. and there is nothing wrong with him.. My son is 17 soon to be 18 months also.. and he doesnt say half as many words as that.. but he does say DAH for dog too.. isnt that weird.

He says.. Papa.. Dad. Mama.. Buhbuh.. Spongebob (UGHBOB).. dog ( DAH ) really that is it.
court | Jan 13, 2010
We often strive to have kids who meet or exceed the norms, but every child develops differently.
My niece has struggled with her speech since her first word to now (shes 4) and everyone was worried there was a problem. Even now her sentence structure is weak.
But in every other regard shes a happy and creative kid.
I think you daughter has a great range of vocab and you do great by helping her develop it.
Im sure in time you will be looking for ways to stop her talking!
One thing I remember is a specialist saying that those kids who eat solids late also struggle with speech as the mouth and tongue muscles take longer to develop. This may be something to watch, but again, not necessarily worry about
Bob | Jan 13, 2010
i wouldnt worry, some children dont start talking for years, it sounds to me like she is just fine and she is normal for her age.
KEW | Jan 13, 2010
she is probably OK, but there is a way that you can make you in-laws quit bugging…have her evaluated by early intervention. It is generally free or low cost, and they will allow you to self-refer. If by some chance she qualifies ( I dont think she will), she will get free/low cost speech therapy up til age 3.
my son said 10 words up until age 2. We got him into early intervention at age 27 months after he tested at a 15 month level expressively. In the next 9 months or so he was able to almost totally catch up to his peers. At age 3 he got into special needs preschool pretty much just on his stutter and other articulation issues. Cognitively he is pretty much equal to the 5 year old typical kids in his class ( who basically missed the cut off for kindergarten)…he is actually pre-reading and doing basic math!!
avonmom | Jan 13, 2010
umm… sounds to me like she’s doing just fine! if that’s the case then your daughter is advanced and my son is the one who is behind in his speech! he’s 16 months and can’t even say half that list of words! he says hi, dada, daddy, ididit ( i did it, but it’s all jumbled together) and that’s pretty much it. he knows what everything is and can get things if you ask him for them, but he doesn’t say the words. i’d tell your in-laws to relax, if it were me.

Isn't Harry Potter and the half blood prince about a trip of all hogwarts students to egypt?
I read this book some years ago, but now i can’t find anything related in the movie and sadly the book was a pdf file and i don’t have it anymore.
It wasn’t actually, but you may be thinking of the third book, where at the beginning the Weasley family goes to Egypt on holiday. Or maybe your thinking of the fourth book, where there are two foreign schools visiting Hogwarts, but they were French and Bulgarian, so I doubt it. Also, Bill Weasley worked as a curse breaker in Egypt and came to work in England around that time. Are you sure you weren’t reading fanfiction or a fake version of the book?

Was there a connection between Bruce Wayne: Agent of Shield (Amalgam) and Darkclaw (Amalgam)?
Amalgam Comics was a series of one-shots produced by both DC and Marvel Comics in which the DC and Marvel Universes were combined. Was there a direct connection to these characters in the books? Were they associated with each other in the books? Did these characters ever meet each other?
The only connection between these characters i know of is the metafictional story
Dark Claw: The Murder Gag:
The Jackal buried Jason Todd in a building - a bomb meant for Dark Claw and Bruce Wayne. everyone believed Jason died. Jason wore the Moonwing suit while Dick Grayson was in Oxford.
No, they were unrelated I believe. Dark Claw’s identity was Bruce Logan, correct?

Did you like this joke ?
A guy arrives at the pearly gates, waiting to be admitted. St. Peter is reading through the Big Book to see if the guy’s name is written in it. After several minutes, St. Peter closes the book, furrows his brow, and says, "I’m sorry, I don’t see your name written in the Book."
"How current is your copy?" he asks.
"I get a download every ten minutes," St. Peter replies, "why do you ask?"
"I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I was always the stubborn type. It was not until my death was immanent that I cried out to God, so my name probably hasn’t arrived to your copy yet."
"I’m glad to hear that," St. Peter says, "but while we’re waiting for the update to come through, can tell me about a really good deed that you did in your life?"
The guys thinks for a moment and says, "Humm, well there was this one time when I was drivin’ down a road and I saw a giant group of biker gang members harassing this poor girl. I slowed down, and sure enough, there they were, about 20 of ‘em torturing this poor woman. Infuriated, I got out my car, grabbed a tire iron out of my trunk, and walked up to the leader of the gang. He was a huge guy; 6-foot-6, 280 pounds, with a studded leather jacket and a chain running from his nose to his ears. As I walked up to the leader, the bikers formed a circle around me and told me to get lost or I’d be next.
"So I ripped the leader’s chain out of his face and smashed him over the head with the tire iron. Then I turned around and yelled to the rest of them, "Leave this poor innocent girl alone! You’re all a bunch of SICK, deranged animals! Go home before I really teach you a lesson in PAIN!"
St. Peter, duly impressed, says "Wow! When did this happen?"
"About three minutes ago."
Thanks
